Take Action

Taking Action is an integral part of being a member of the Alameda County Tobacco Control Coalition. The tobacco industry and those who support them are constantly looking at opportunities to keep us from achieving our goal of a truly “Tobacco-Free” Alameda County.

On this page we will highlight any new tobacco control campaigns that are going on locally and on the state, federal and international levels.

Current Campaigns

ü  Come to the City Council Meeting on Nov. 15 to Show your Support!  City of Alameda Adopts Smoke-Free Protections for Residents and Visitors. http://www.cityofalamedaca.gov/Residents/Secondhand-Smoke-Policies  Send your thanks to Mayor and City Council [attach sheet]

ü  Raising the price of tobacco guarantees that many kids won’t start and that some folks will quit.  Sign up to get the latest info on the new $1 tobacco tax increase initiative – CALIFORNIA CANCER RESEARCH ACT- Find out how you can help ensure that this life-saving measure will pass in the June election.

Highlights of Recent Campaigns

Ø  July 2011: City of Dublin increased the percentage of smoke-free units in apartments to 75%, effective in 2013. http://dublin.patch.com/articles/no-butts-about-it-city-tightens-smoking-ban

Ø  November 2010: Union City passes comprehensive SHS and tobacco retailer licensing ordinance.  Strongest protections in the County. http://unioncity.patch.com/articles/union-city-green-lights-smoking-ordinances-for-greener-air
